STICKNEY AMERICAN LEGION POST 26 CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
American Legion and Post 26 to Celebrate 100 Years
The American Legion will celebrate 100 years, and as part of the celebration, a group of American Legion motorcycle riders will ride from North Dakota to Kansas with a stop in Stickney on August 2. They will meet a group riding from Texas. The route will follow Highway 281, which is also called The American Legion Memorial Highway. The highway is the longest 3-digit continuous U.S. road, running from the Canadian border to the Mexican border.
The ride will begin on August 1 at the International Peace Garden in Dunseith, North Dakota, and end in Great Bend, Kansas. The riders will stop in towns that have American Legion Posts, but many of those will be very brief stops, or stops not open to the public. The stop in Stickney will be different. The Legion Riders will stop in Stickney at 4:30. They will be available for pictures and will eat in the park at 5:00. Following a brief ceremony, welcoming them, they plan to depart at 6:00. The event will be open to the public and will continue until later in the evening.
There will be a free will donation pork loin sandwich supper. There are plans for a slow pitch softball tournament in the works, as well as inflatables for the kids, and other activities. The committee is hoping for 4-6 teams for softball. Jon Beckman is in charge of the tournament, so be sure to contact him if you are interested in putting a team together, or if you are looking to join a team for the evening.
Parking will be limited, so a shuttle is in the works. Those who don’t want to fight the parking lots can arrange to be picked up and brought back home.
In addition to celebrating the 100th birthday, the American Legion Riders are well-known for their charitable work. They raise money for children’s hospitals, schools, veterans homes, severely wounded veterans, and for scholarships for children of servicemen killed since 911.
More information will be coming as the committee for the event continues to meet. Make plans to attend. It will be a night of good food, fun, and patriotic pride. It’s also a great way to help showcase Stickney. We are the smallest town they will be stopping in, and we are the only place to visit with the riders. Keep watching for updates in the Stickney Argus and on the town of Stickney’s Facebook page.
